The Rainshadow Community Charter High School Blaug Week #7 A Poetic Challenge – The Pantoum!

This week, Sammy’s Interdisciplinary Hip Hop and Literature course showed us a bunch of stuff that they have been learing about – the history of hip pop culture in America, censorship, different hip hop sub-genres (its not all gangsta rap apparently), and some students even read their poems and freestyled for us to some live beats. We learned a few new literary styles (including the pantoum), wrote some poems of our own, and now we challenge YOU to come up with the best pantoum you can and post it here as a comment. Here are the two formats that we practiced with…

Pantoum

First line: What is your name?
Second line: Where are you from?
Third line: Physical characteristics?
Fourth line: Who do you love?

Fifth line: Repeat second line.
Sixth line: New line (make something up).
Seventh line: Repeat fourth line.
Eighth line: New line.

Ninth line: Repeat line six.
Tenth line: New line.
Eleventh line: Repeat line eight
Twelfth line: New line.

Thirteenth line: Repeat line ten.
Fourteenth line: Repeat line three.
Fifteenth line: Repeat line twelve.
Sixteenth line: Repeat line one.

Physical surrounding pantoum

First line: Look outside, what do you see?
Second line: Look around the room, what is in your line of sight?
Third line: Look at the surrounding people, describe what you see.
Fourth line: Where would you rather be?

Fifth line: Repeat second line.
Sixth line: New line.
Seventh line: Repeat fourth line.
Eighth line: New line.

Ninth line: Repeat line six.
Tenth line: New line.
Eleventh line: Repeat line eight
Twelfth line: New line.

Thirteenth line: Repeat line ten.
Fourteenth line: Repeat line three.
Fifteenth line: Repeat line twelve.
Sixteenth line: Repeat line one.

Maybe we’ll get to know each other a little bit more by writing some poetry together, and we will have some fun doing it!
