So, what’s up with May Day anyway?

May Day occurs on May 1 and refers to any of several public holidays in many countries. May Day is synonymous with International Workers’ Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. As a day of celebration, however, the holiday has ancient origins and can relate to many customs that have survived into modern times. Many of these customs are due to May Day being a cross-quarter day, meaning that it falls approximately halfway between a solstice and an equinox.

Here in Reno at 10 a.m. on May 1st at the Federal Building, the Ad Hoc May Day Committee is holding a public demonstration of SOLIDARITY with the warehouse and dockworkers who are risking their livelihood to stop this war. With a few honorable exceptions, none of the so-called “friends of the workers” in Congress have stood up to the Bush Regime, or used the legislature’s power of the purse to force theissue. It is up to the workers themselves to end the war and occupation through our own direct action.
