Community Show Pick – Glitterer by Draven

HP Community Pick is a semi-regular blog series where community members have the chance to highlight a show they’re stoked about. This pick is brought to you by Draven who plays in local projects Wisecrack and Bug Bath, has toured with numerous regional bands, and has attended so many gigs. He knows his stuff!

“A night full of modern guitar music’s best TRACKS. Glitterer’s output ranges from barebones drum-loop and synth TRACKS to hook-filled loud and fuzzy pop rock TRACKS. The through line across the material is simple but quirky songwriting, creative yet tasteful basslines, existential lyrics, and a dancey upbeat vibe. Having seen this project play across all of its eras, the addition of a full live band makes Glitterer a must-see for a wide range of show-goers; from synth-wave to shoegaze, to powerpop, to emo, this band has something for everybody. Their 2024 release Rationale is a favorite of mine this year.

I toured with Toner for about a week last fall, and I excitedly watched them play every night. They are the most punk “indie” band. They are the most rockin’ “shoegaze” band. They have one million TRACKS at their disposal. They simply kick ass. God’s Hammer is technically a comp of singles from the past couple of years, but it’s my favorite 2024 release anyway. All real rockers will be in attendance during their set.

I’m actually most excited to check out Draag. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them, and have only briefly listened to them in preparation for writing this. I really appreciate the ear for melody in the vocals and leads. I also pick up on some trip-hop influence, which is always a welcome inclusion for me. They got TRACKS. I’ll be there early to catch them for sure.

There’s nothing in this world I find more inspiring than a lifer. From an artistic perspective, it’s rewarding to follow along a career for all of the hits and misses, or to jump in at any point and dig through the past works of an artist. From a personal perspective, it can be very validating to look at a lifelong creative and say to myself “They’re still going, so I got no excuses.” Glitterer and Toner are bands led by and comprised of lifers. Led by Ned Russin (Title Fight and about a million sick hardcore bands) and Samuelito Cruz (Happy Diving and a million sick bay area punk bands) respectively, both bands have been releasing material for years, and both vocalists have a lengthy discography full of TRACKS to dive into after the gig.”
