HP Community Pick is a semi-regular blog series where community members have the chance to highlight a show they’re stoked about. This pick is brought to you by Olive, aka Baby Abeille – an iconic local DJ and dare we say, rising pop star. They’ve been fans of Brooke Candy since nearly day 1, so listen up!
“As a middle schooler with a Tumblr blog and unsupervised access to the internet, I was first introduced to Brooke Candy through her appearance in the Grimes music video for Genesis. I then looked into her and discovered her first single, “Das Me”, which would go on to have a significant influence over my highly impressionable 12-year-old self, and 12 years later, I’m still a fan.
As an icon of underground music, fashion, and the queer art scene, Brooke Candy is easily one of my favorite pop girlies. Her music features very bold and in-your-face sex positive lyrics over cute and cunty genre-bending instrumentals, with some of my favorite songs being Cum, XXXTC, and Yoga. She also has many collaborations under her belt with artists such as Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, SOPHIE, Lizzo, Sia, Iggy Azalea, and countless more.
Following the recent release of her sophomore album “Candyland”, the electropop powerhouse Brooke Candy will be performing at the Holland Project on October 3rd. I’ve seen Brooke Candy dj at the Boiler Room collab with Subculture, an LA based, queer, hyperpop/pop party, and I’m excited to finally see her perform a live set here in Reno at the Holland Project. The Holland rarely books pop acts, so me and all my gays, theys, and girlies can’t wait.”
