MSPAINT + The Mall, Elleanor Burke, Lich
November 26, 2022 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM • $10.00 – $12.00
Formed in late 2019, MSPAINT features luminaries of Hattiesburg, Mississippi’s vibrant local scene. In a landscape already brimming with innovative, against-the-grain acts, the band still manages to be an outsider among outsiders. Their four song self-titled debut showcases a band that is both steeped in decades of rich musical tradition and distinctly post-modern. MSPAINT effortlessly weaves together an eclectic range of influences into a sound that’s as reassuringly familiar as it is strikingly new. If timelessness is a key component of truly great music, MSPAINT meets that criterion with flying colors. Their music would be just as at home in 1990 as it is in 2020, and it would be equally singular in any decade. As much Rollins Band as it is Death Grips, Devo as it is Metz, it’s hard not to find something to love, regardless of your proclivities. – Grey Gordon
The Mall (St. Louis) is a synth-punk duo with a pile of hardware, synthesizers and cables making aggressive, unpredictable, but emotionally focused dance music. Debuting with Zone at the beginning of 2020, the album’s claustrophobic darkwave resonated with a moment where isolation was suddenly relatable to everyone. Now, in 2022, their new album Time Vehicle Earth confronts the impact a person has as part of the world. The emotions run hotter, the beat is unrelenting, and the intent is clear: The Mall envisions a future without lines between punk scenes and dance clubs, breaking the walls at every opportunity to invite the inevitable chaos.
