Fine Motor’s third album, Half Normal, is out on April 2nd, 2021 on Exotic Fever Records. With the addition of strings and horns, vocal harmonies, tempo changes, increased dynamic range and layered textures, Half Normal represents a period of evolution for Reno’s Fine Motor, who have outgrown the confines of more conventional indie-rock. As UK music blog For the Rabbits recently wrote, “When the clouds part and normal musical service is resumed, Fine Motor might just be better placed than ever to make a monumental splash.”
Most noticeable among the band’s shifts is that of Morse from guitar to piano, lending the album a moody, rhythmic foundation that interplays beautifully with drummer-singer Casey Bell’s deep-in-the-pocket beats. Bell’s lyrical abilities have grown too. She sings of a palm reader who sees only into the broken past, the environmental devastation awaiting future generations, and a world empty of its people.
Fine Motor began as the songwriting project of Casey Bell and Daniel Morse in Philadelphia, PA. When the couple relocated to Reno, NV, they recruited Chris Mays (guitar) to join them. Their first album was released by Exotic Fever Records in 2017 and garnered comparisons to the Breeders, Built to Spill, and Yo La Tengo. The band’s second LP, Giant Woman (2020), praised by mxdwn for its “beautifully poetic” lyrics, was recorded at Panoramic House studio (Cate Le Bon; Palehound; Sea of Bees).
