E.Y.E.S.O.R.E. Screening: A Different Type of Church by Ryan Cardoso

May 28 @ 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join us Sunday May 28th 4-7pm for the screening of A Different Type of Church (2023), a visual mixtape by Ryan Cardoso exploring style and dance as a religious practice and documenting how spirituality has evolved in the 21st century. Ryan uses found footage, screen recordings, and original footage to document a contemporary experience of dance + style as well as how his personal relationship to media and technology has shaped culture. You can view a trailer for his film here.

This screening will also feature a short video essay, WHO ME YES YOU COULDN’T BE THEN WHO (2020) by ***X Lee and a surprise movie selected by Ryan Cardoso. ***X Lee’s video essay is a calibrated edit of audio and video fragments that uses appropriative methods to expose the plausible deniability of white supremacy, fixing it in its slipperiness.

This event will follow the 1st Reconfiguration of our current Curator Series exhibition, Something Unfinished About Us: Traces of a Particulate Configuration. In this show, curators M Jiang + ***X Lee create configurations and mappings of physical and digital debris. This screening is an extension of the show’s exploration into fragments as data and raw material, and highlights the resourceful language of video collage that uses direct samples to shape a collective contemporary experience.

Something Unfinished About Us: Traces of a Particulate Configuration is a curatorial experiment initiated by M Jiang and ***X Lee and the first exhibition on view as part of the 2023 Curator Series. The curators M Jiang and ***X Lee are artists currently living and working in Reno, Nevada.
