Error Code is a selection of images distorted through old scanners, fax machines, dot matrix printers and other assorted electronics, which produce images that can’t be replicated with digital tools. I run handmade paper through the printers and use scissors, tape, and glue to create my final images. This lead to many error codes, distortions, and malfunctions in the process of making the work, which create interesting textures and details. In this show I want to highlight the unique images that can be created by pushing the limits of the outdated technology I use.
Corey Gyll is an artist and musician born and raised in Reno, NV, and currently works as a screenprinter at Fuel Promotions. His art practice is influenced by the aesthetics of hardcore punk and powerviolence and artists like Tommy Wilson and Mark McCoy. His process involves printing, faxing, cutting, and pasting images pulled from thrifted books to make collages before making xerox scans of them. He is drawn to images that capture a moment in time and make you think in a new way. He does not use photoshop; instead he lets the machine determine how the images are reproduced. The unpredictable outcome of using outdated technology like the fax machine and the dot matrix printer is what excites him most.
