Creating Connections: Art & Core Knowledge 2
May 18, 2017 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
We are proud to partner with art teachers, Elizabeth Banks and Leah Ruby, for a special two week pop-up exhibit in the Holland Project Micro Gallery from May 15 – 26 showcasing artwork made by students from Rita Cannan Elementary and Veterans STEM Academy, the only two elementary schools in the Washoe County School District that have certified (half-time) Art Teachers.
Elizabeth Brooks and Leah Ruby are dedicated to the idea that core content knowledge can be taught through art. Each and every lesson has not only Visual Art Standards but Common Core or Next Generation Science standards that are addressed. The art teachers connect each grade level’s core content with the elements and principles of art as well as with famous artists from Da Vinci to Chihuly to develop their own visual art curriculum. Students not only enjoy the art making process, but the opportunity to explore their core content through artistic concepts. This kind of learning is called Arts Integration and studies show students participating in Arts Integration exhibit improved critical thinking, language development, and retention of learning material due to the high level of engagement with their learning. This exhibit is a small sampling of integrated artworks that the K-6th grade students have produced throughout the year.
Join us in celebrating the wonderful work of all the students and their dedicated teachers during the opening reception on Thursday, May 18 from 5-7pm in the Micro Gallery located inside Bibo Coffee Co. at 946 Recprd St., Reno.
