Cowboys, Soldiers & Goddesses Reception
August 15, 2019 @ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Cowboys, Soldiers, and Goddesses features the work of artists Shay Arick (NY via Israel) and Maggie Hazen (NY via Los Angeles). Their separate yet thematically intertwined practices engage with the influence of the American hero/ine in popular culture; spanning the history of popular entertainment and media, from Greek Mythology to Western movies and into today’s virtual experiences in video games and other immersive media. This exhibition wrestles with the dichotomy of heroism—both fictional portrayals and the reality of the embodied hero/ine. These heroic characters such as the Goddess Athena, John Wayne and other appropriated familiar icons are mingled together in their works raising questions about how the hero/ine affects individual and collective identity. In this show, Arick’s sculptural work and Hazen’s video installations echo each other and lure viewers into a world where fiction bleeds into our visceral reality.
