HP Community Pick is a semi-regular blog series where community members have the chance to highlight a show they’re stoked about. This pick is brought to you by Christine Felch aka DJ Christine (local melomanic, dreamer, terrier enthusiast, and past program contributor at KWNK) on the Soft Kill show on September 5, 2024, playing with Béton Armé and Still Ruins. Here’s what they had to say.
“Soft Kill return to The Holland Project on September 5 in support of their Escape Forever Tour. Soft Kill has consistently made some of my favorite records in the past decade and this show is not to be missed. Seeing them at our beloved Holland Project is such an enormous gift, as they are playing to larger and larger crowds by the day.
Combining the best parts of my most precious teenaged 80s bands and beyond, Tobias pulls from a rich history of punk, post-punk, British guitarswirl, hooky basslines, driving drums, and oscillating synths, alchemizing it all into stunning songs that are contemporary and fresh. Drawing from a deep well of personal trauma, addiction and loss, he takes you into the back alleys and dark, sleepless nights of a life he narrowly escaped. Pain and addiction are ubiquitous and even Reno has a tragic connection to the „Dead Kids“ he calls dear friends that didn’t make it out alive. While no one can dispute that life can be filled with pain and struggle, there is also a sense of defiant hope in Soft Kill’s music as well. Even in mourning those who slipped into the ether, there is a profound sense of love and connection – a true sense of what really matters while we are here.
So, come out to Holland on September 5th and we can all acknowledge what a true sh*t pile the world can feel like sometimes, while also celebrating that we are all here, together, escaping into a foggy, guitarswirl of music that transcends it all and takes us away. If at least for a moment. But isn’t that what makes life worth living?
And DO NOT forget to scrape up a little extra cash because Soft Kill is known for some of the best damn merch offerings out there. Thanks for still coming back to The Holland Project, Soft Kill, Reno truly loves you.”
