Community Show Pick – Pelada by Berto

HP Community Pick is a semi-regular blog series where community members have the chance to highlight a show they’re stoked about. This pick is brought to you by Alberto Garcia Rodriguez (local dj, artist, former gallery manager) on the Pelada show on August 2nd, 2024 who play with an absolutely stacked bill including ClownClubVIP and Radio Ammunition. Here’s is what he had to say.

“On August 2, 2024, Pelada, the Montreal-based, rave-punk duo consisting of Chris Vargas and Tobias Rochman, will perform at the Holland Project. My first encounter with a Pelada track was at a queer-centric rave somewhere in Brooklyn. Amidst the throbbing bass, the hypnotic swirl of dancing bodies, there was no real opportunity to shazam for a track ID, and the “keep your cell phone in your pocket” policy was a rule I always respected in such “liberating” spaces. Ultimately, Peladas, “Ten Cuidado” track that played at the rave that night came back to me and my affinity with this duo hasn’t ended.

Their music has been a visceral, linear soundtrack to process the ongoing effects of late-stage capitalism. For better or worse, as the world seems to teeter on the brink of collapse, Pelada’s sound emerges as a raw, urgent reaction to the pervasive struggle. Their chaotic blend of industrial, punk, and electronic elements captures the tumultuous spirit of our times; offering both a critique, and a cathartic release amid the surrounding disarray. Vargas’s Spanish lyrics form powerful statements that evoke cultural resonance and compel listeners to reflect and take action.

This blend of personal connection, social commentary, and musical innovation makes Pelada a formidable force in the underground scene. Sadly, they are scheduled to disband in early 2025 and are playing their last few shows. This upcoming performance at Holland is a rare opportunity to experience their powerful live act before it’s no longer possible.”
