Part of the 2026 Serva Pool Flux Series

Anthony Alston’s work tends to involve aspects of the aleatoric, opportunistic, and transitory. Themes gravitate around predictability, perseverance, and insipidness. Loosely organized and systematic processes cajole a semblance of cohesion and continuity from ostensible serendipity, happenstance, or randomness.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the conceptual underpinning of any given piece typically determines its medium. Projects are often deceptively minimal, or, recursively layered: relics and distortions becoming magnified by each subsequent generation and permutation, a literal and figurative patina of inherent artifacts iteratively speckling surfaces, structures, and processes.

The title of the exhibition, Anacolu— refers to a rhetorical or grammatical disruption of expectation or direction. An overarching motif for the exhibition is the re-contextualization of disparate and antiquated drawings, sculptures, and photos by means of collage. Originally considered finished, the pieces can now be seen as ‘remixed’ or ‘remastered’, fitting into a more cohesive compilation. Additionally, a new site-specific sound piece using real-time input from the audience and unique reverberation of the space rounds out the interdisciplinary gamut.
