A Friendly Meandering is a two-person exhibition featuring works from Kristin Hough and Rodrigo Ormachea. The artists – close friends since high school – are collaborating to make works focused on the hyper-local. Hough began working on her “walking paintings” when IVF and pregnancy complications limited her ability to work and travel. The works are drawn from observations of the square block surrounding the places she lived, first in Pasadena, CA and now in Las Vegas, NV. Ormachea is making ceramic pieces drawn from his time in residence at Taft Gardens in Ojai, CA. While the works are at times ambiguous and amorphous forms, they draw heavily from observations of his time spent in Ojai and his dad’s backyard garden in Ventura, CA.The pieces are a dialog between artists and friends about being home and away from home and about the power of shared observations from places both spectacular and mundane.
The exhibition is on view for one weekend only as part of The Holland Project’s Serva Pool Flux pop-up series. In addition to the works on view, visitors are invited to create a small ceramic object in the gallery that will become part of a larger ceramic work assembled and completed by Ormachea.
About the Artists
Kristin Hough is an artist, educator and curator working in the expanded field of painting. Her visual research is grounded in personal and public archives, centering on a voyeuristic inspection of human longing. The paintings mine popular culture, kitsch, and the American West, revealing both the banal and the transcendent. Hough received her MFA from the University of California, Davis. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in New American Paintings. As a curator, she’s mounted exhibitions throughout the western United States and co-founded the artist-run space Outback Projects. She currently serves as Graduate Faculty and the Specialist Coordinator for the Low-Residency MFA programs at the University of Nevada, Reno. Born in Cusco, Peru, in 1989, Rodrigo Ormachea earned a BS in Landscape Architecture from UC Davis in 2011. His background in large-scale design gifted him a keen spatial awareness that continues to influence his work across various mediums. Though he was raised in his father’s workshop, it was not until 2018 that he formally stepped into the role of bench jeweler, joining the family business. In 2024, Rodrigo expanded his craft at Firestick Pottery in Ojai, where he quickly mastered the medium and now serves as the studio’s Kiln Technician, overseeing the firing process for both members and students. He was most recently featured in collaboration with his father, Hugo, as Taft Garden’s 9 month artists in residence for 2025/2026.
